Why Kakawa Chocolate House Makes 18 Chocolate Elixirs

kakawa chocolate house

The 1775 Marie Antionette Elixir is based on the recipe the queen brought with her from Vienna to the French court, and includes orange blossom water. “What we’ve done is basically built off of those initial ancient recipes,” Bennett says, and made versions as close to the originals as possible using present-day ingredients. Kakawa’s Mayan Spiced Chocolate and the Aztec Warrior elixirs, based on bitter chocolate beverages sacred to those civilizations, are made with 14 to 17 different herbs, spices, flowers, nuts, and chilis.

LA MAISON DU CHOCOLAT

Due to the delicate nature of our preservative-free, artisanal chocolates, we are unable to ship internationally. Marcella Wright began working in the cheese industry in 2008 for Fred Meyer, a division of Kroger. During her employment with Kroger, she was a Special Matter Expert and opened 75 Murray’s Cheese Shops by training the staff and setting the cheese cases. She is a member of the International Guilde des Fromagers, New World Order.

Our Chocolates

The Bennetts collaborated with other researchers to find those recipes and use them as the base for what they sell in their shops. “Kakawa” is from the Olmec civilization, which predates Mayan and Aztec civilizations; the word, Bennett says, is the earliest word for chocolate that we know. Valerie Confections is not only Los Angeles's premier chocolatier and dessert-maker, it's also recognized as one of the nation's top confectioners. Since 2004, the company has made hand-crafted chocolates, petits fours, cakes, chocolate-covered toffee, preserves, baked goods, and more from only the best all-natural ingredients. Known for its modern interpretations of classic desserts and its elegant gift packaging, Valerie Confections has become synonymous with luxury chocolate.

The recipes for Kakawa’s Mesoamerican elixirs are based on the work of food anthropologists. Made with little to no sweetener, most are flavored with chili, spices, nuts, and herbs. For example, the Chili Elixir contains unsweetened chocolate, agave nectar, ancho chili, and vanilla. We draw on chocolate's long history, re-creating original Mesoamerican, European and Colonial chocolate elixir recipes, and using them to inspire our new and exciting creations. We have a startling variety of contemporary flavors including Passion fruit, Cherry Chile, our signature- Goat Cheese & Sage, and Mescal and offer a number of dairy-free and Vegan confections. Kakawa also offers classic European-style truffles such as French Dark and Raspberry Hazelnut.

Give the experience of our famous chocolate elixirs and handmade chocolates as served in our Kakawa specialty chocolate shop in Santa Fe. In addition to elixirs, Kakawa Chocolate House crafts truffles, solid chocolates, caramels, and organic ice cream. Bennett notes that those products offer more room for creativity, since they aren’t based on historic recipes. For example, the shop’s signature truffle features goat cheese and sage. Berkshire Hathaway to pay $250 million to settle real estate commission lawsuits

I was desperate to find a home base for Hill House that allowed us to tell our own story, and allowed customers to walk into the world we’ve created. We were incredibly fortunate to find a space on the iconic Bleecker Street just 1.5 years into the business. Having a physical space to speak to customers, share our story, and merchandise our product has been a dream for me. What are some of the design elements that define your brand and aesthetic? Design and aesthetic are incredibly important to me, and that’s something I so often see overlooked in the home category at our price point.

Here are the common occupant mistakes made in real estate

LAPD officers responded and quickly took the suspect into custody without incident. LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- An intruder was arrested after breaking in to the Los Angeles mayor's official residence early Sunday morning, officials say. "I think (it's) really cool that every owner since has just kind of preserved her memory for the space," Putman said. Putman said the architect does not design much anymore, but she believes this is one of his greatest homes. "This is definitely the exact kind of house where you would dream," Gambino said in an interview with USA TODAY.

The beginner’s guide to Los Angeles

Negro families… throughout the entire nation-won the right on Monday to live in their own homes, to buy homes wherever they choose, or to rent homes in any section of the city. Race restrictive covenants through the momentous action of the United States Supreme Court, became overnight no more than worthless sheets of paper, unenforceable in any court in the land. They can still be written and signed, but they cannot be backed by court action.

To express the continuity of the building skin and minimize the conventional distinctions between roof and wall planes, an elastomeric, cementitious exterior coating material was used requiring no control joints. The embedded lavender color of the coating was sampled from the pigment of eucalyptus bark, prevalent at the site, re-enforcing the house’s connection to the site from which its form is derived. The material’s iridescent quality results in dramatic color variations with changing light conditions throughout the day. Similar to the monolithic exterior coating, the interior materials are detailed to suggest spatial continuity. Materials in varying shades of white, including polished Carrara marble, smooth Corian countertops, lacquered wood, and enameled steel seamlessly meet throughout occasionally accented by darkly stained walnut flooring and cabinets. A meadow of various native California grasses forms a blanket covering the slope surrounding the house.

And some were enterprising ladies who rented out rooms Harlem-style, you know. Sensing an opportunity to establish a new foothold for the numerous middle class and affluent members of the black community, social leaders started to buy homes in West Adams Heights. On South Harvard Boulevard, the most prominent families built Craftsman and Victorian mansions that put most LA structures of the time to shame. The property boasted endless porches, a beautiful, large backyard, and a basement that McDaniel converted to an air raid shelter. The public rooms were delicately appointed, painted in light colors, and decorated with French provincial ivory furniture.

Ivy League-educated Nell Diamond grew up between London, Tokyo, and New York and created Hill House Home after graduating from business school and struggling to find a cool and quality brand to help bedeck her first “adult” apartment. Now, three years later, Diamond is launching Hill House Home Baby. A full circle for Diamond, the entrepreneur found out she was pregnant just weeks after her company’s launch in 2016. As residents across urban California have decamped for more space and affordability in the exurbs, small towns statewide have grown in popularity.

Completed in October 2004, the Hill House was designed under challenging conditions generated by modern problems of building on a hillside. Located in Pacific Palisades, California, while the site for the house offers panoramic views from Rustic and Sullivan Canyons to Santa Monica Bay, the irregularly shaped lot is situated on an uneven, downhill slope. With the canonical Eames House nearby, the 3300 square foot Hill House provocatively continues the Case Study House tradition of experimentation and reinvention of Los Angeles lifestyles. He immediately moved to bar any testimony by or on behalf of the plaintiffs, arguing that restrictive covenants violated both the fourteenth amendment, which mandated equal protection under the law, and the California State Constitution.

McDaniel’s eclectic passions and achievements were on full display—her white grand piano, her collection of books on African-American art and history, her doll collection. While Chalamet intends to live bicoastally and keeps up his apartment residence in Manhattan, the Dune actor currently has a few high-profile projects in the works. Following in the footsteps of two Hollywood heavyweights Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp, Chalamet is set to reprise the role of Willy Wonka in the upcoming remake of the Roald Dahl classic, titled Wonka. In the meantime, fans can enjoy Chalamet’s newest animated film Entergalactic on Netflix, wherein the actor voices the character of Jimmy opposite rapper Kid Cudi.

Brick and mortar has always been in the plan for us, and in many ways it was one of the reasons I started the business. I was a brand fanatic as a child; I remember deciding at age eight that I was a “GAP girl,” and refusing to wear anything else for years. I would patiently wait for their iconic commercials to come on TV and try to memorize every look. I constantly begged my Mom to take me to the GAP store on the King’s Road in London, nearby where we lived. I’ve always been obsessed with the stories brands tell through products and experiences, and there is no better place to tell these stories than in person.

McDaniel also took a lead role, holding meetings at her home and organizing around 30 black neighbors, including Beavers and Waters, to fight the suit in court. Black attorney and NAACP activist Loren Miller would represent the group. But some of the neighborhood’s remaining racist white residents were determined to kick their new neighbors out of their hard earned homes. Although many of those residents leftover from the old days were quickly won over by the numerous improvements the new homeowners made to their properties, protests had begun quickly. Waters lived across the street from McDaniel, who became the anchor of Sugar Hill.

My usual go-to is to say I work for a direct-to-consumer brand in the home space. We offer free health and dental insurance, a 401k plan, generous time off, and an inclusive culture that supports your personal development.

Now free, at least temporarily, from being evicted, black Sugar Hill continued to flourish. The Hotel Watkins opened on Adams Boulevard in 1945, and became the place for jazz legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Dinah Washington to stay. Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company built a magnificent new headquarters at 1999 West Adams Boulevard. Designed by African-American architect Paul Williams, it featured murals by Hale Woodruff and Charles Alston that told the history of black people in California.

It is time that members of the Negro race are accorded, without reservations and evasions, the full rights guaranteed them under the 14th amendment of the Federal Constitution. Certainly there was no discrimination against the Negro race when it came to calling upon its members to die on the battlefields in defense of this country in the war just ended. It was sort of an offshoot in an area that had rather grand houses that had been left behind, and so Negroes with enough money bought these houses. And some of them were movie people who had made enough money to buy a large house and live grandly.

The short history of West Adams and Sugar Hill Curbed LA

After a long period of product development, sampling and strike-offs, seeing the final finished product is always the moment I cry. If you’re truly making something special, the design process is long. Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara says the proposed reforms, which would not need legislative approval or to be signed by the governor, represent the biggest changes to the state’s insurance market since 1988. Specifics have been scant and the overhaul is still in draft form, but Lara expects the process to be complete by the end of the year. Allstate confirmed in a statement to Bloomberg News that it seeks to increase its market share in California, but rates must “fully reflect the cost of providing insurance to consumers” before agreeing to lift its current restrictions.

Residents who can endure the stifling heat are rewarded with home median home prices at an astonishing $52,000. Both communities in the Riverside-San Bernardino metropolitan area saw home values dip about 17% in the last year. “In Trona, you’re talking about 115-degree summers, but people adjust and they get through,” Berri said. Located less than four hours from Las Vegas and an hour from Death Valley, Trona offers a desert lifestyle with home prices that can’t be beat in California. Trona, a “desolate area that was very much thriving back in the ’50s and ’60s,” was littered with abandoned homes after plants closed decades ago, said Berri, 49.

The aperture strategy results from a desire to both minimize the quantity for privacy and efficiency in terms of environmental performance, and to maximize size for views, ventilation and light. With the relationship of the site and building to the street, the conventional rear of the house in essence becomes its front with spectacular views of the canyon and ocean to the north, east, and south. Large sliding glass doors in the living area retract into concealed pockets, erasing boundaries between interior and exterior. Where windows and doors are recessed into the building volume, the exterior material membrane folds into the house to form deep sills and thresholds respectively. The recessed windows of the private rooms frame specific views to the exterior while limiting views into the house.

Even with the 8-figure price tag, Chalamet bought the property at a $700,000 discoun , according to Dirt, since the house was initially  put on the market for $11.7 million earlier in the year. There’s also a quaint guest house built separately from the main building, affording guests the ultimate privacy while visiting. Up front, the driveway and yard are lined with red bricks surrounding a sizable grass lawn. Now, “people are fixing them up and making the community better,” he said. Like so many California real estate deals, you have to journey off the beaten path, make compromises and have some imagination. The Sentinel’s telephone rang continuously from the moment the unanimous decision…. It was as if the great mass of Negro people in Los Angeles could not believe that at long last their elementary right to a decent place to live without being herded and squeezed in shameful and hateful ghettos had been recognized. Clarke’s ruling made him “the first judge in America to use the 14th Amendment to disallow the enforcement of covenant race restrictions,” according to the West Adams Heritage Association. The decision was immediately appealed by the white homeowners, but the decision set an important precedent for future suits concerning racial covenants.

The testimony marks the first time a large property insurer has publicly promised a return to the market in the disaster-prone state if the new regulations are implemented. "Anytime you have a break in at a residence of note, in this case the mayor's residence or even just a very high-profile person, you kind of (question) is the security system up to snuff?" Thomas said. Bass was home when the male intruder broke in, law enforcement officials told ABC News. An alarm was activated at the home and a large LAPD presence responded, including air support and the mayor's security detail. In late 2022, Bass' Baldwin Hills home was burglarized by at least two people.

With a design-centric approach, Hill House offers impeccable quality, and timeless, delicate styles through quality products designed to enhance and celebrate life. An aesthetic point-of-view and customer-led approach bring a fresh, accessible perspective to these time honored categories. New homeowners, made up of the solidifying white upper class of boomtown Los Angeles, were required to sign racially restrictive covenants as part of the deed to their properties, promising to never sell to African Americans. These covenants were prevalent throughout Los Angeles (and all of America) during the early 20th century, a reaction to increasing black mobility. Covenants were the reason that African-American life in LA centered around Central Avenue during the first half of the 20th century; it was one of the few places in Los Angeles that black people were legally allowed to live. The Hill House is a contemporary residence located in Pacific Palisades, California.

From the start, we were thinking about ways to add little moments of joy and beauty into our product. We encouraged customers to add song lyrics, favorite phrases and secret messages to their pillowcases, and it really took off. When we design, we want things to feel fun, pretty, happy, and different. We’re not in this to create products that already exist, and design is such a wonderful way for us to share our point of view. I launched Hill House because I couldn’t find beautifully designed, well-priced, thoughtfully sourced products for my first real, adult apartment. I wanted to have fun creating a home for myself, and to build a little sanctuary that made me happy after a long day of work.

By eroding all non-structural walls and partitions, the program flows effortlessly between three levels stacked within the exterior skin. 15 Gorgeous Modern Kitchens That Are Warm and Inviting

In the 2023 Real Simple Home, the team behind Yellow Brick Home covered the fridge and corresponding wine color in the same cabinet fronts used throughout the rest of the space for a streamlined look. Open kitchen shelving ideas and storage with glass doors are here to stay, so prepare to tidy and curate a display. Wood is back and is classically rich and elegant – think walnut paired with metal, texture or boldly-veined stone and hints of leather with the feel of an Art Deco bar or sumptuous home library. Breakfast bar ideas are a brilliant use of space, offering seating without the need for a clunky dining room table. Line it with a luxe material for some old school glamor and add a wine fridge and chiller drawers for ice, beer and soft drinks to make it an all-round party station.

Wynn, who is a LACMA board co-chair, has already given LACMA $50 million — one of the largest single gifts in LACMA’s history — Govan notes, adding that he doesn’t know how much more the L.A. Heather Harmon, executive director of Las Vegas Museum of Art, says the museum is tentatively slated to open in 2028 and has established a campaign fundraising goal of $150 million, as well as plans for an endowment. The deal isn’t a jackpot for L.A., which has long been promised its own satellites. Chic, streamlined kitchens while looking beautiful, can risk being a little flat and free of personality, so to avoid this make sure you mix in plenty of textures. Style with (equally stylish) white metro tiles to create some contrast and brass accents, if you're going all out. If you're concerned about the space feeling a little too clinical, try working different textures into your space to break up the use of one color.

What’s the latest technology in appliances?

Sleek grey cabinets that effortlessly complement the warm and natural tones of wood elements equal a match made in design heaven! The contrast between cool grey and earthy wood creates a captivating balance that will have everyone’s jaws dropping. Convenience and sophistication need not be at odds with each other; with an up-to-date and personalized kitchen, you can most certainly have your cassoulet, eat it too, and even savor a cocktail afterward.

Sleek Counter Stools

It’s a playful look with cubby hole storage that is functional but treads the style-line well to feel more Scandi than schoolhouse. If you're wondering what 2021's kitchen trends are, they are very much led by the need for the spaces to feel warm, welcoming and above all practical. Whether it's through cabinet handles, light fittings or a portable trolley-style island, there are a number of ways to incorporate these urban touches. If you have the floor space, why not opt for a full-on open plan kitchen, creating a three-in-one space with a kitchen, dining room and a lounge. This is the ultimate set-up for entertaining, after all, and works well for larger families. This kitchen by Eggersmann makes use of sleek, handleless cabinetry for a streamline design.

Bold, statement pieces can be a key feature of modern kitchen design, whether it’s a standout backsplash in luxe marble or a striking stone, or a grand statement island as a focal point feature. The trick with modern kitchen design is that ultimately less is more, so it’s fine to go ‘big’ with one key standout feature, as long as the rest of the scheme is reserved and restrained in comparison. As an alternative to a double island, consider filling your kitchen with an extra-long island. There's plenty of room for seating and working in this modern kitchen by Design Alchemy. Note the rounded white pendant lights with a gold interior, tall wooden cabinetry, and gorgeous marble backsplash with beige veining.

Create a plush look with bespoke island countertop ideas with a generously deep overhang instead of a standard thickness top. A modern twist on the classic waterfall edge, it stops short of the floor, leaving space for extra units underneath while still looking super-luxe. If splashy colors aren't really what you're aiming for, but all-neutral isn't quite it, either, opt for a color that feels extra earthy. Here, Cedar & Oak adds subtle color by painting the underside of the island a soft sage green. Leather lends a handsome touch, while black and white details anchor the space. For an elegant yet playful kitchen aesthetic, borrow some ideas from this beautiful space dreamed up by CM Natural Design.

Light Wood and Gray Kitchen

Modern kitchens—with their sleek lines, natural sunlight, and neutral color palettes—are also coveted and are arguably one of the most timeless design approaches you can take. Whether you’re considering a complete remodel or seeking inventive ways to modernize your space, we've rounded up 20 of our favorite modern kitchen designs to inspire you. The streamlined design stands in provocative contrast to the graceful kitchen alcove arch. The island, finished in brushed brass panels, features an undermount sink for a more streamlined design. The room is finished with a Trove wallcovering on the ceiling to serve as a faux skylight. In his Birmingham cottage, architect Paul Bates was inspired by woodwork in David Adler’s Clow house in Chicago to design the rectangular carvings in this low, white oak cabinetry accented with brass hardware. At any given time, there’s a confluence of design approaches considered en vogue. The main difference between a modern and contemporary kitchen is based on definitions.

Skylight windows are the hero of this design, flooding your cooking space with sunlight that dances playfully on the countertops. Sleek cabinetry may be a staple of modern design, but open shelving—when it's done right—can blend the look perfectly. In this space by designer Katherine Carter, natural wood shelves showcase white dinnerware to match the subway tile backsplash. Since the space is mostly white, the use of different textures from dark grout to smooth bowls and countertops breaks up the uniform color. If you're excited about the modern look but don't want to change up your traditional furniture, this kitchen by Maite Granda is an inspiration for the in-between. This monochromatic and moody set-up is perfect in a kitchen with little natural light, as it embraces the existing space and creates a cozy and intimate speak-easy effect. Modern kitchen design is all about clean lines—something that most modern appliances don’t really allow for. After all, a floor-to-ceiling wall of cabinetry looks much more streamlined when it’s not visually interrupted by a massive refrigerator. While black cabinetry may scream “modern design,” it definitely conveys a specific look and may be too bold a shade for some kitchens or homeowners. Any color can work in a modern kitchen, as long as you pair it with the right cabinetry profile. Here, the team at Studio Peake opted for an airy cornflower blue (plus plenty of pops of orange) on slab front cabinetry, whose simple profile and no-frills attitude convey a modern ethos.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

The pantry and utility have long hit the top of the wish list for a country kitchen, and it’s turned out to be a contemporary kitchen dream too. The kitchen extension is by far the most popular home improvement project, and it’s no surprise. At this Hamptons beach house, designer Alex Papachristidis stuck to a palette of ivory, white, silver, and gold. In the kitchen, Soane Britain’s polished brass-trimmed yacht table lends ship-shape style under a brass leaf Tommaso Barbi chandelier (circa 1970). In this Charlotte, North Carolina, mid-century modern kitchen restored by architect Ken Pursley, a thin, plated-steel prep counter extends off the sink to face the den. Behind the doors to the left is a butler's pantry that serves as a second hideaway kitchen to keep prep and cleanup largely out of site.

These 32 Modern Kitchens Still Have Plenty of Personality

By incorporating geometric shapes into the kitchen's storage, the room is filled with texture and color alike. This space by House 9 is as clean and simple as it gets, but the addition of handwritten messages and drawings gives it a personality that no paint color can achieve. Give everyone in your household a place to get creative (plus, think of all the recipe notes you could jot down with a wall like this). This kitchen seriously one-ups the open shelving situation, creating small arched inlets for each little vignette (with targeted lighting included). While we might miss the extra cabinet space that's lost in a design like this, it's pretty hard to argue with the unique architectural detail and surplus style provided by these adorable arches.

Imagine a sleek and minimalistic kitchen island equipped with a discreetly integrated wine cooler, perfect for showcasing your finest wine collection. For all the modern men out there seeking to add a touch of sophistication to their kitchen, the kitchen island pendant light is the perfect choice. This captivating lighting fixture serves as a statement piece, becoming the focal point of your culinary haven. Its creative design elevates the ambiance and adds a dash of artistry to your space. Welcome to the epitome of culinary creativity with these modern kitchen ideas, tailored especially for our male audience. Imagine a kitchen bathed in a glorious shower of bright natural light, the secret ingredient that enhances your cooking experience.

When we think of modern kitchens, our minds often go straight to a classic white color scheme. However, this striking kitchen by Blueberry Jones Design takes the opposite approach by utilizing black everywhere. Inky cabinetry and black marble are balanced with shimmers of chrome details and a handsome wooden island. Kitschens epitomize all things kitchy — they blend old-school charm and retro style with fun colors and a touch of sentimental nostalgia. While much of modern design lies in its clean lines, the choice of lighting makes an impact. In this kitchen by Gold A La Mode, a statement chandelier hovers above the room to create a warm, welcoming glow.

We're all about matching hardware across different accents in a room, but JK Interior Living takes the gold medal (literally) with this dreamy kitchen. Not only did the designer pick the same finish for plumbing, cabinet handles, and chair legs, but they took it a step further with golden outlines to frame each cabinet door. Paired with simple white textures and marbled backsplash, this kitchen is the chic design of our dreams. Picking a wall color is a big decision, but increasingly we're drawn to spaces that have more depth than just a single flat shade.

If space allows, incorporate a double island in your kitchen, as pictured in this modern space by Blueberry Jones Design. It maximizes your working surface area, allows for more storage, and offers another place to sit. LACMA might be a de facto museum of contemporary art, but frankly it’s not a very good one. Govan and Wynn Resorts co-founder Elaine Wynn sit on both the Vegas museum and LACMA boards. Govan does not expect any conflicts of interest to arise, and points out that many arts leaders occupy multiple board seats across the city and the country.

While other people count how many countries they've visited, Amy tots up how many countries' washing machine factories she's toured (it's eight by the way, from South Korea to Slovenia). She can't leave the house without a decent pair of noise-cancelling headphones, and is always ready to explain an acronym – be it QLED, DAB or HDMI. Smart appliances have been sitting on the horizon for some time, focusing on great results for all cooking abilities. Ovens with pre-programmed cooking functions ensure success, and most allow you to add your own recipes too. Look for interactive control screens and interior cameras that let you keep an eye on the cake from your smartphone. In the brighter spectrum, we are seeing pared-back simplicity in plywood with candy-colored doors.

This cool, contemporary kitchen by Naked Kitchens proves that modern doesn't always have to mean monochrome and you can still be really creative. It's actually standing on a pedestal that's much smaller and sits underneath the island. It stops the island feeling too heavy and blocking light in the narrow space of the kitchen.

She lodged in the apartment now known as the Queen of Scots rooms, on the top floor above the great hall, which faces onto the inner courtyard. An accomplished needlewoman, Bess joined Mary at Chatsworth for extended periods in 1569, 1570, and 1571, during which time they worked together on the Oxburgh Hangings.[8] Bess died in 1608 and Chatsworth was passed to her eldest son, Henry. The estate was purchased from Henry by his brother William Cavendish, 1st Earl of Devonshire, for £10,000. Perhaps even more than books however, his love of sculpture was evident as the newly designed north wing could accommodate his growing sculpture collection.

Such a task would fall on the next Earl, who in the 1680s recognised the need for repairs which were executed through an extensive rebuilding project, which replaced the South Front and worked on the Painted Hall and many other rooms. The 4th Earl was also heavily involved in the progress of the work and died in 1707 after seeing his plans come to fruition and Chatsworth restored to its former glory. During this time, the Earl of Shrewsbury was selected as the keeper of Mary, Queen of Scots who had been imprisoned by Queen Elizabeth I in 1568 after her escape to England. From the Painted Hall a grand staircase leads up to the State Apartment, a suite of four rooms lavishly decorated in anticipation of William and Mary’s visit. In the end the royal couple never came, but many a subsequent monarch did – the last, George V, in 1913, slept in the enormous canopy bed occupying the State Bedchamber. The king’s night’s sleep may not have been entirely restful – the bed had previously witnessed the dying moments of George II at Kensington Palace in 1760.

The house boasts a wealth of interesting art, furniture and antiques as well as exceptional architecture throughout a number of its stunning rooms. A must-see at Chatsworth House is the amazing Devonshire Collection, which displays an array of interesting items from the family’s personal collections. The changes would significantly alter the aspect and view of Chatsworth, which is what the 4th Duke had intended. Moreover, he also focused his attentions on the garden which now included part of Edensor village.

In 1823 the Bachelor Duke acquired the Duke of Rutland's land around Baslow to the north of Chatsworth in exchange for land elsewhere. He extended the park about half a mile (800 m) north to its present limits. He had the remaining cottages of Edensor inside the park demolished, apart from the home of one old man who did not wish to move, which still stands in isolation today. The houses in Edensor were rebuilt in picturesque pattern-book styles.

The area is the water source for the gravity-fed waterworks in the garden. The Swiss Lake feeds the Cascade and the Emperor Lake the Emperor Fountain. The Bachelor Duke had an aqueduct built, over which water tumbles on its way to the cascade. The 4th Duke commissioned the landscape architect, Lancelot "Capability" Brown to transform the garden in the fashionable naturalistic landscape style of the day. Most of the ponds and parterres were turned into lawns, but as detailed above several features were spared. Many trees were planted, including various American species imported from Philadelphia in 1759.

A Visitor from Woburn Abbey

The beautiful enormous heritage house is over three hundred years old, and the house’s interior carries all signs of the aristocracy and the elegance of England. This heritage building served as the seat of the Cavendish family from the year 1549. “Then when we close after Christmas we have a fairly small window, until 10 March, to get the deep clean of the house done. That’s a military operation.” The behind-the-scenes operations at Chatsworth might be a military operation now, but in times past the amount of servants required to keep the Cavendish family in comfort and luxury resembled a small army. William and Mary were also the inspiration for the stunning collection of delftware vases – the fashion for which was started by their Majesties’ Dutch origins.

The River Derwent is just beside the house, and you can enjoy the views of the low hills between the Derwent and Wye valleys from the banks of the river. I have fond memories of playing in the water and enjoying a picnic. Initially built in 1669 and rebuilt in 1701, the grand baroque Temple or Cascade House was added in 1703.

If you've booked tickets to the house, your house entry time is printed on your ticket but you're welcome to arrive at Chatsworth anytime from 10am. The farmyard has been a favourite day out for children since 1973. There are so many farmyard friends to meet, from Eugenie the rare breed Suffolk Punch mare to Itsy and Bitsy the pygmy goats.

The next room is the Duke's Study, which has two windows, many more books and floral decoration painted for the Bachelor Duke by, in his own words, "three bearded artists in blouses imported from Paris". The corner room on the ground floor is the former "little dining room". These rooms are all very high, as the ground level in the west wing is lower than that of the Painted Hall and the ground floor corridors round the courtyard. Three corridors called the Tapestry Gallery, Burlington Corridor and Book Passage are wrapped round the south, west and north passages at this level and give access to family bedrooms.

In both cases the Settlement receives a percentage of turnover as rent. The Chatsworth Settlement has a range of sources of income in addition to agricultural rents. Several thousand acres, mostly round Chatsworth and on the Staveley estate, are farmed in hand. The façade is dramatic and sculptural with ionic pilasters and a heavy entablature and balustrade. The existing heavy and angular stone stairs from the first floor down to the garden are a 19th-century replacement of an elegant curved double staircase. Like the south front it is unusual in having an even number of bays and no centrepiece. The emphasis is placed on the end bays, each highlighted by double pairs of pilasters, of which the inner pairs project outwards. Chatsworth House is built on sloping ground, lower on the north and west sides than on the south and east sides. The original Tudor mansion was built in the 1560s by Bess of Hardwick in a quadrangle layout, about 170 feet (50 m) from north to south and 190 feet (60 m) from east to west, with a large central courtyard.

These stables once stalled 80 horses and had an onsite blacksmith shop. The stables and courtyard are now home to The Cavendish Rooms, consisting of a cafe and a shop, along with rooms to hire for events. For me, the gardens of Chatsworth House are where the natural beauty lies. The gardens are breathtaking – especially if you experience them during the summer. Almost 300,000 travelers and tourists visit Chatsworth House every year. A fraction of the 1.4 million visitors that The Biltmore Estate in North Carolina enjoys.

The family dining room is in the south-east corner and has the same dimensions as the State Dining Room directly above. This has been the usual location of the family dining room; the Bachelor Duke's dining room in the north wing took over that role for an interlude of little over a hundred years. Both Bess of Hardwick's house and the 1st Duke's house had a hierarchy of three dining rooms in this corner, each taller and more lavishly decorated than the one below. A common parlour on the ground floor was used by the gentlemen of the household, and later for informal family meals. Above it was the main family dining room, and at the top the Great Chamber, which was reserved for royalty, although the 6th Duke wrote that to his knowledge, it had never been used.

Next is the sculpture gallery, the largest room in the house, and then the orangery. The Belvedere Tower contains a plunge bath, using marble from the 1st Duke's bathroom, and a ballroom that was later turned into a theatre by the 8th Duke. Above the theatre is the belvedere itself, an open viewing platform below the roof. Social change and taxes in the early 20th century began to affect the Devonshires' lifestyle. When the 8th Duke died in 1908 over £500,000 of death duties became due.

We opted to walk around the gardens, but did not have time to see all of it. In fact, we saved seeing the cascade until the end of our visit without realizing they shut the water off a bit before closing. It was fun to imagine what being a guest at Chatsworth House would have been like. I could picture myself staring out at the gardens through one of the huge windows.

Marvel at the historic and modern waterworks, discover hidden gems or find your own favourite spot – the historic garden has something for everyone. I acknowledge that I have read and agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. The one disappointing thing was the lack of signs to explain more about the rooms in the House. When we entered, they offered to sell a guide book for an additional fee, but thinking about the money we spent on admission I passed.
